James Lancel McElhinney is a visual artist, blogger, author, and fine press publisher. Trained at Tyler School of Art (BFA in painting), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale (MFA in painting), McElhinney is the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since 2005, painting in book form has given McElhinney greater mobility. Identifying with expeditionary artists such as John-James Audubon, George Catlin, and Seth Eastman, McElhinney regards his paintings as leave-no-trace interventions mindful encounters with nature, history, and science and mining human experience in search of knowledge and ideas. His works are found in the collections of the Hudson River Museum, West Point Museum, and Albany Institute of History and Art. McElhinney lives in Manhattan and Champlain Valley with his wife, scholar and author Dr. Katherine E. Manthorne, and a feline named Maeve. www.mcelhinneyart.com
