Crazyhorse by Daniel M. McClinton is an account of flying Apache attack helicopters in Iraq from 2006 to 2007. The book focuses on a period of intense combat in and around Baghdad, often referred to as “the Surge.” The book includes everything from declassified war crimes trial documents to descriptions of grueling days in the cockpit:
“Finally, we were released to return to Taji. After takeoff, Dawg punched in a direct route back home and we flew as fast as the aircraft would go. We arrived back at Taji and taxied into parking, shutting down with over eight hours of flight time for the day. I hadn’t left the cockpit or moved out of the seat once in that time. As the APU wound down, I sat in the back seat, enveloped in the dark and a sudden silence. The flight line seemed so quiet. I let out a long sigh and massaged my aching right hand. I realized I had been squeezing the cyclic grip the entire time; it was something I did as a nervous habit. There was no feeling of triumph or victory . . . I was just tired, and we still had a long way to go. I hope we don’t have many more days like this.”
. . .and interactions with annoying or silly officers around base:
“While flying missions, he operated with the philosophy that almost everything he saw was part of a cunning enemy plan. If we saw a piece of plywood lying in the middle of the road, it was a pressure plate switch for an IED. If we saw something white drying on a plastic sheet, it was homemade explosives that had been cooked up by AQI. He was dogged and determined to find the “evildoers.” The problem was
that a lot of the time, he applied evil intent to common, everyday activity. Fortunately, the rest of us were normally able to tamp down his enthusiasm for engaging inanimate objects in the name of total victory.”
All is accompanied by the author’s original, previously unpublished photography from his tour in Iraq. Crazyhorse: Flying Apache Attack Helicopters with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq, 2006–2007 is available for preorder, and back orders should be shipping around the start of the new year.
