Glenn H. Curtiss is one of the most important and most famous early aviators and aircraft designers. In America, Curtiss was the chief rival of the Wright brothers in the prewar era. Before venturing into aviation, Glenn was among the country’s leading motorcycle racers and manufacturers; the V-8 motorcycle aboard which Curtiss set the world land speed record is on display at the Smithsonian.
Less well known than Curtiss’s aviation or motorcycling endeavors was a design that evolved into the “Aerocar.” The Aerocar was a flexible concept that took many different forms, but the original version was a camping trailer, similar to a modern caravan or RV (recreational vehicle). The key to the aerocar was a patented tow-coupling system, which Curtiss built around an airplane wheel and tire.
The “Aero Coupler” made the Aerocar quite a bit safer and more stable at road speeds than earlier designs. This meant that Aerocars could be used for commercial or utilitarian towing purposes, but also as overnight living quarters, and some bespoke variants were even quite luxurious.
Schiffer is very excited to partner with the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum on two new books, one on the Aerocar and another on the Curtiss motorbikes, now available on our website.
