Schiffer has published many books on real spacecraft, some of which have been discussed in this newsletter. Now, we have a book on the related but more whimsical topic of flying model rockets. Model Rocketry: America’s Hobby in the Cold War, 1960–1980 by Alexander Procyk includes more than eighty kits produced from 1960 to 1980, mostly by Estes. The model is shown in the thumbnail image.

“Scissor Wing Transport launched with a rubber band–loaded wing locked in the vertical position on the body. The engine was contained in a removable pod, which ejected out the back, releasing the wing. The wing swung out and the rocket glided back to Earth, with the pod returning via parachute.

22.75 inches. 16-inch wingspan.”
