The Second World War comes to Reading, Pennsylvania, every summer, when the Mid Atlantic Air Museum hosts WWII Weekend. WWII Weekend is a combined air show and reenactment. The air show usually features a roster of roughly 20 flying WWII aircraft, along with a handful of static displays, including the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s own P-61 Black Widow.
Along with the aircraft, the grounds of the airport are populated by hundreds of reenactors, living in several camps, grouped by nation and unit. Along with uniforms, weapons, and other equipment, the reenactors usually bring along a wide variety of armored vehicles, even some tanks.
The vendor areas have a lot to offer for collectors and enthusiasts, with deals to be had on everything from vintage uniforms and equipment to toys and models, and even SCHIFFER BOOKS!
I have been attending the event on a near-annual schedule since I was a child, including the 2022 show, where these photos were taken. The most exotic aircraft that I have seen fly was a real A6M Zero. It was unforgettable to meet Ed Shames of the famous Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. I have always enjoyed the show, regardless of whether I received lobster-esque sunburn or got soaked in the rain. I have sampled all the snacks, from the salty soft pretzels to the sugary funnel cakes.
The next WWII Weekend is June 2-4, 2023. I hope to see you there!
