As the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is considered to be one of the most important months, if not the holiest, for Muslims. As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Ramadan is a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

What some may not already know about Ramadan is that this is also the time for giving--not just one's prayers to Muhammad, but their money and works of charity as well. There is a lot to learn about this month of fasting, which can be hard to include in a blog post. So we've answered some basic questions to help outsiders navigate the month and respect our neighbor's practices.

When is Ramadan?

Typically from April to May. To be exact, Ramadan 2022 begins sundown on Saturday, April 2, and ends with Eid al-Fitr on May 2.

How do I respect Ramadan and the people in my life who participate?

An easy way to be more considerate of your friends or family who take part in Ramadan is to be conscious of their daily routine. Avoid making calls or spontaneously visiting them during times of prayer--typically very early in the morning (dawn) and then again at night. If you are unsure when your friend or family member prays, now would be a good time to ask!

How do I greet my friends who participate in Ramadan?

Is it important to know that Ramadan is a time for fasting, not celebration--so wishing someone a "happy holiday" would not be the correct way to greet them. You could simply say "have a blessed Ramadan" and continue on your way.
